But the police were involved. For better or worse, the list of police failures during the Shergar investigation made one wonder whether they were any help at all. Leading the investigation was Chief Spt. Murphy, commonly known as “Spud.” Murphy would eventually become a key figure in the media’s portrayal of the story but not for the right reasons. He came to represent everything that the police got wrong during the case. This was perhaps summed up in the one quote that was passed into common parlance in Ireland and Great Britain, becoming a repeated and legendary phrase across all forms of media. When asked about the investigation, he responded with the phrase; “A clue? Now that is something we haven’t got.”
